Monterey Bay is one of the loveliest spots on the West Coast. This remarkably
diverse area offers fine restaurants, bed-and-breakfast inns, and tourist
attractions (both natural and man-made) that reflect its history
and heritage. The Monterey Bay area has attracted artists and writers for more than a century. The best known on the long list of names include novelists Robert Louis Stevenson, Mary Austin, and John Steinbeck; poet Robinson Jeffers; actor Clint Eastwood, and photographers Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Carmel's heritage as an art colony lives on in dozens of art galleries.

A semicircle about 90 miles across, Monterey Bay is on the California coast about a two hours' drive south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Santa Cruz sits at the northern end of the bay, and the Monterey Peninsula, containing Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel, occupies the southern portion. In between, Highway 1 cruises along the coastline, passing windswept beaches piled high with sand dunes. |
